In 2007, while out in Nyirripi (a very remote Aboriginal community in the NT), employed as a youth worker, I was in the passenger seat as we drove about in the troopcarrier. As I drank in the amazing colours of the Tanami desert, this song came into my mind. I grabbed a piece of scrap paper and started to write as we bumped along in the red sand. I am still praying and hoping that one day someone will come along and put this to music.
Gods Brown Skinned Babies
There's a people in this nation, that others never see
A brown skin population, that sits beneath the trees
Their eyes look down on mother earth, yet everything they see
Their mouths speak very little, yet they know much more than me.
Gods' brown skin babies, live in the desert sands
They may seem so forsaken, forgotten by all man
But Jesus sees them one by one, and takes them in His hands
Cause their Gods' brown skin babies, in the heart of this great land
The children laugh so freely, amongst community
Amazing when you see it, they're one big family
They share the little that they have, with everyone they meet
Their treasures are in heaven, to be enjoyed eternally.
Gods' brown skin babies, live in the desert sands
They may seem so forsaken, forgotten by all man
But Jesus sees them one by one, and takes them in His hand
Cause their Gods' brown skin babies, in the heart of this great land
